New Android App Lets Your Phone Pay Bar Tabs

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Finally - a genuinely useful real-life application. Tell me this one wasn't born out of a developer's real-life crisis.

ATX Innovation has announced that its TabbedOut mobile application is now available for free download on the Android (News - Alert) Marketplace. This particular bit of genius lets bar and restaurant customers open, view and pay bar tabs directly from their smartphone.

You can see the obvious advantages.

David Lemley, ATX's co-founder and CTO, said the "response from our iPhone (News - Alert) App customers has been incredible, pushing us to expand to other major smart phone platforms. Customer demand, carrier availability and the rapid growth of the platform made Android an obvious choice for TabbedOut."

The app lets users open, review and pay for restaurant and bar tabs from their mobile phones. It was first available on the iPhone and will also launch on the BlackBerry (News - Alert) in 2010.

Gartner has estimated that the Android OS will become the second-most popular mobile phone operating system by 2012. Gartner also predicts that the popularity of the Android OS will surpass that of the iPhone, which Gartner (News - Alert) predicts will be number three in that same year.

We'll see about that. Me, I wouldn't be betting the mortgage payment on that particular prediction.

"Having completed development with our first national partner, Future POS, we are focused on taking TabbedOut to a national audience," said Rick Orr, co-founder and CEO.

TabbedOut is currently live at many restaurants and bars in Austin, Dallas and Chico, California including The Mohawk and The Blind Pig Pub in Austin, Lakewood Bar and Grill in Dallas and Broadway Heights California Cuisine in Chico.

In other Android news, TMC's Marisa Torrieri reported recently that  and NetLogic (News - Alert) Microsystems has announced the availability of D2's mCUE converged communications client on NetLogic Microsystems' Au1300, a member of the its ultra low-power Alchemy processor family.

The collaborative product, unveiled early at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will offer OEMs and ODMs an advanced platform for Android-based IP communications devices. These include media phones that deliver media-rich embedded applications with an optimized performance, cost and power-consumption profile.
