D2 Technologies Creates Two Business Units, Promotes Industry Veterans

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

In an effort to meet increasing demand for its embedded communications products, D2 Technologies recently made several management and organizational changes.

The embedded IP communications software platforms provider moved industry veteran Doug Makishima into its chief operating officer spot. He will also be the acting head of D2’s new Mobile and Personal Communications Business Unit.

David Wong, chairman and CEO of D2 Technologies (News - Alert), said the continued broad adoption of the company’s flagship embedded VoIP product, vPort and the introduction of its communications user interface, mCUE, has spurred growth in two distinct business Silos.

“This reorganization will help streamline our operations and enable us to meet and exceed our design, production and customer service goals,” said Wong.

Earlier this year, D2 Technologies released the next generation of its flagship product line VPort – designed to enable OEMs and service providers to deliver to market the advanced mobile and CPE communications products.

The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company’s mCUE pairs a communications user interface with the company’s vPort MP VoIP software platform to address the needs of OEMs and service providers delivering integrated UC and Fixed Mobile Convergence (News - Alert) functionality.

Used together, the mCUE converged mobile communications client software, and the vPort media engine-enabled processors support IP video delivery for enterprise conferencing systems, media handsets, digital photo frames and other emerging devices.

The mCUE recently became the first commercial smartphone operating on the Android (News - Alert) mobile operating system from Google and its design is expected to provide manufacturers with a turnkey software solution for developing and delivering WiMAX (News - Alert) handsets and similar portable devices to market.

In addition, the company tapped Paul Wu, a networking industry professional based in Asia, to vice president of the Fixed Access Business Unit.

“We couldn’t ask for better business unit leaders than Doug and Paul, who have made significant contributions to D2 over the years.  These promotions are well-deserved.”

Makishima, formerly the vice president of marketing and sales at D2, is a long-time veteran of the networking, storage and communications industries. Prior to joining the firm in 2006, he was vice president of marketing at Intoto (News - Alert), a provider of network security software platforms.

Based in D2’s Taiwan office, Wu most recently was the company’s senior director of Asia Business Development, overseeing operations, sales, marketing and customer relations throughout Asia.
