Making the Most of a Mobile Workforce

By Brian Solomon, TMCnet Web Editor

Along with mobility comes the necessity for a successful management strategy with regards to handheld devices. With companies moving to reap the benefits of mobile productivity, they've done it with no a centralized approach in place.

Today's enterprise is going mobile. Quite simply, enterprises like the gains in productivity that can be achieved with employees who are able to work from virtually anywhere.

The inevitable issue with a relaxed approach to mobile deployments is that it often neutralizes any improvement in productivity and also leads to vulnerabilities in security. Herding users into one platform, i.e. the BlackBerry (News - Alert), is not always practical. MDM systems offer a way of performing security support, device lockdown, inventory and policy management, as well as providing backup while allowing users to pick their own devices.

Vendors like Amtel (News - Alert) make those management systems. They provide the necessary support for handhelds and laptops, as well as data encryption.

If enterprises are to make the most of a mobile workforce, proper mobile device management is the key. With the proper MDM in place, those enterprises can truly reap the rewards of having employees who can contribute no matter where they may be. Mobility is the future, and MDM is ensuring that future lives up to all it can be.
