The Importance of Telecom Asset Management

By Brian Solomon, TMCnet Web Editor

The management of telecommunications assets can typically be categorized with ease: purchasing is responsible for contract negotiations and agreements, human resources is responsible for employee accountability, and each division manager is usually in charge of a given device or its means of use. The way to maintain control over mobile assets is most commonly for all telecommunications needs to be managed by a single person.

It’s important to know who is actually responsible for a company’s telecommunications assets, billing and contract obligations, employee reimbursement, and the data on any devices used by employees. An effective mobile management company enables a compnay to manage its assets while at the same time understanding everything from procurement and help desk to policy management.

Due to governmental controls like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the data itself is almost always the responsibility of the security team. Most organizations struggle to keep an updated accounting of all data, devices, assets and physical locations of equipment.

Security and compliance issues may not be directly connecting to managing mobile assets, but there is still an important connection between the data security operation and the organization that is accountable for the mobile assets. The relationship must be formalized, meaning that the responsible managers must be made directly accountable for any data loss which results from lack of data security or physical accountability.

There is a whole category of software called TEM (Telecom Expense Management) solutions that are designed to fit these needs. They can track, update, manage, optimize, automate, audit and secure the usage and inventory of telecom assets. As a result, not only do companies gain an understanding of their assets and spending, they can experience sizeable savings based on the usage of these individual devices.

The necessary amount of actual manpower needed to analyze, optimize and maintain aan organization's asset base is usually cost-prohibitive. But with TEM software, companies can manage how they conduct business more efficiently and effectively.

There will always be certain misconceptions pinned to software-based solutions, but with TEM, the audit portion is demonstrable evidence of an organization’s understanding and successful management of its telecommunications assets. Data collected in the analysis and optimization process can be used to protect your organization, and reduce a portion of the regulatory management costs. This could very well add additional revenue to the bottom line.
