Investment in Network Security Set to Increase in Next Seven Years

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

With the rapid changes that have been taking place in the network security space and the exponential growth of mobile devices, there is a lot of potential for increased market investment. "The Mobile Device & Network Security Bible: 2013 - 2020" report confirms this, predicting it to grow at a CAGR of nearly 21 percent over the next seven years with investments accounting for nearly $9 billion in 2013 alone.

Signals and Systems Telecom enumerated the many factors that could trigger the rapid growth of the global mobile device and the network security market.

Faster network connections, more remote users, increase in the volume of traffic, and the growing adoption of open source Operating System (OS) platforms like Android (News - Alert) has opened up new security threats. All these factors will make securing the network a challenge, upping the ante on security strategies.

With the BYOD (bring your own device) trend catching on, smartphones and tablets are invading the corporate sector, and enterprises are being forced to adopt SSL VPNs in their mobile security strategies for monitoring and control. Necessarily, then, enterprises and mobile network operators will have to increase their investments in integrated security appliances and content security gateways.

As Internet attackers evolve their techniques, so too must network security integrate with devices to detect attacks. Anti malware and antivirus will become a de-facto requirement and security capabilities also need to evolve, calling for more aggressive investment.

Also with cloud based mobile security services becoming more attractive, mobile device management service providers are looking to protect data and the enterprise, creating in the process another avenue for investment – mobile security as a service.

Further, mobile device OEMs are also integrating advanced biometrics into their smartphones and tablets to facilitate mobile payments. Small, medium and large enterprises are beginning to adopt cloud services and SaaS (News - Alert) at a greater rate.

The number of applications in the cloud is growing rapidly, and connected devices are increasing; as a result, security solutions need to evolve to keep pace, making increased investment in mobile device and network security inevitable.
