BYOD Drives the Need for Mobile Device Management

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Cloud Computing

With the proliferation of consumers using mobile devices and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trends comes the escalating need for mobile device management (MDM).

With one in four devices used for work purposes is either a tablet or smartphone, Netshield saw the need to add MDM to its portfolio of managed IT services. The more devices employees use, the more vulnerable they are to IT security risks, according to Richard Carty, commercial director of Netshield.

“Due to the growing demand by our customers for workforce mobility, Netshield recognized the need for MDM; as on average employees carries three devices with them and working on them while on the move, which can increase IT security vulnerabilities,” said Carty.

The new service is designed to help businesses lower potential data security risks involved with corporate mobile device usage and BYOD policies in the workplace.

“Mobile device management is essential to today’s businesses. Our new service will enable our customers to work anywhere in the world without worrying about potential data security breaches or business data falling into the wrong hands if the device is lost or stolen,” Carty added.

With a next-generation mobile device management solution in place either on-premise or in the cloud, users can secure and manage mobile apps, content, and devices for global companies. NetShield is one of several MDM providers that are helping businesses prevent data loss as mobile apps become mission critical and widely adopted.

MDM provider MobileIron recently expanded its AppConnect Partners – a group of software solution providers that see the importance of embracing mobile IT and enterprise mobile apps by making their applications available as part of the MobileIron AppConnect network.

Among the new AppConnect Partners includes Accellion, Averail Access, Box, iPass (News - Alert) and TouchDown by MicroDesk.

MobileIron’s AppConnect program is designed to provide businesses with advanced security for mobile apps. As mobility becomes a primary computing platform for the enterprise, every business function will mobilize core operations through apps. These apps live outside the enterprise perimeter and can run on personally owned or minimally managed devices. Mobile IT must protect the app data while preserving the user experience.
