With a large number of mobile devices is entering enterprise networks, mobile device management has been a major concern due to security and compliance issues.
To identify how organizations manage risk and compliance around their mobile devices, SANS Institute (News - Alert) is organizing a survey on Security Policy and Management of Mobile Devices.
The agency is inviting participants to the survey, here.
The SANS Survey on Security Policy and Management of Mobile Devices is the second such survey by SANS Institute. Earlier in March 2012, the agency released a survey on mobility security. That survey drew more than 650 respondents from all levels of IT and audit across multinational and midsized organizations.
In the mobile security survey, SANS found that 60 percent organizations allowed employees to bring their own devices, but only 9 percent were fully aware of the devices accessing corporate resources.
This trend, according to Deb Radcliff, executive editor of the SANS Analyst Program, indicates a huge gap between policies and actual management of the new risks presented by mobility. Mobile device management becomes critical and imperative in this scenario.
The second survey builds on these results.
"It was surprising to find that while many organizations are allowing or thinking about allowing bring your own device, they do not have the controls necessary," said Kevin Johnson (News - Alert), senior SANS analyst and course instructor who authored the first SANS survey on mobility security.
"In this survey we hope to gain an idea of how organizations are looking to implement the needed controls and what those controls are," Johnson added.
The new SANS survey helps the IT community understand the level of controls that are working – and not working – to enable today's highly mobile workforce. SANS is also giving away two $200 American Express (News - Alert) Cards to two respondents who chose to be entered into a SANS random drawing.
Meanwhile, a recent MSP Mentor report highlighted the complexities surrounding mobile device management and its impact in the market today. Read the full details of the report here.
