Apple (News - Alert) lovers rejoiced the day the much anticipated iOS 5 was released. Along with many new security options, the platform can be seamlessly integrated with a mobile device management solution provided by MobileIron to increase security in the enterprise.

Within email security, the iOS 5 allows IT departments to turn off the email forwarding setting to prevent corporate email from being forwarded to anywhere other than a corporate account, which can completely eliminate corporate data loss.  S/MIME enforcement will also ensure that all email uses S/MIME, which provides for a much greater level of security.

Through MobileIron’s Enterprise App Storefront, increased control is at the touch of your fingerprints, as apps can automatically be deleted that were installed using MobileIron. If users select to remove the MDM solution on their devices, IT has the ability to then go in and delete all items including email, calendar and contacts as well as enterprise apps.  Moreover, IT can easily disallow apps from sending email to prevent any confidential information being leaked, while the iCloud app sync enables IT to completely bar apps from syncing with iCloud or iTunes.

Additionally, other security and configuration options enable IT to: turn off iCloud autosync so that device-side data is not synced to iCloud; develop a customizable web proxy instead of allowing the end-user to do; manage enforcement so that if end-users happen to delete their MDM profiles, they can quickly again begin to use the mobile device management solution; decide when to send crash data to Apple and if an end-user can accept a certificate from an unknown source; require an iTunes password to make iTunes access more secure; choose a configuration option that allows the user to automatically connect to a Wi-Fi network without having to first select it; turn off data and voice roaming unless the end-user is utilizing Wi-Fi; and access device battery level information.

iOS 5 will significantly affect organizations that allow their employees to BYOD (bring your own device) to work. Enterprise IT will now have much more visibility into exactly what is taking place within a device, thus making it much less complex and safer for employees to utilize their personal iOS devices in a corporate environment.
