Smith Micro Releases Tool to Help With Mobile Device Management

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Industry observer John Cox (News - Alert) recently mentioned how Android and iOS mobile devices “now can be corralled by a Smith Micro mobile device management application,” adding that the client-side code “makes even personally-owned devices visible to enterprise IT managers.”

Talking about the Smith Micro Mobile Device Management client, Cox said it “ran only on products using the Symbian (News - Alert) OS or Microsoft Windows Mobile.” But now, iOS and Android devices such as the Apple iPhone and iPad and Motorola Droid and Xoom are in luck. And if you have RIM BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone (News - Alert) 7 and HP/Palm webOS, well, as Cox says those are scheduled to arrive later in 2011.

TMCnet recently reported that Smith Micro Software officials will be releasing a “new, highly scalable mobile device management solution for enterprises,” remarking that the Smith Micro (News - Alert) Software enterprise mobile device management product was recently named to Gartner's first Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobile Device Management (MDM) Software.

The product implements the Open Management Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) specification for remote mobile device management. The application has a DM server with a Web user interface, and a set of Web service APIs to integrate with various network and IT infrastructures.

The Open Management Client also is based on the OMA DM standard, with proprietary plug-in features.

Some other news that recently made headlines in the mobile device management industry is that Smith Micro Software recently showcased the company's Enterprise Mobility Command Center, a centralized command center for mobile device, expense and application management, during Interop (News - Alert) 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas last week.

As Cox notes, the mobile device management market “is surging, as companies struggle to cope with an influx of mobile gadgets equipped with cellular or Wi-Fi radios, or both. Sometimes, these are company owned but other times they're owned by employees. Numerous vendors are offering products.”
