Mobile Communications: Call Me - On Your iPad

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Not that it’ll gut the iPhone 4S market, but here’s something else you can do with that iPad: Make phone calls.

According to TechNewsDaily, Toktumi (News - Alert) has an app that, in the estimation of their editors, “just may enable the iPad to function like a stand-alone phone, and best of all, not use up your minutes.”

It's called line2, and what it does is add a second line to any iPhone (News - Alert) (or Android phone for that matter). Okay, that’s gee-whiz cool, but here’s the good part: “The best part though, is that you can link it to an iPad and make Wi-Fi calls.”

Wi-Fi calls are what they are, granted, but still. As TechNewsDaily says, “this is good for areas where cell service can be spotty (usually indoors).” No it won’t be crystal-clear quality or reception all the time.

And yes, granted, the iPad doesn't have a normal speaker/mic setup so you’ll probably need a typical headphones/hands free set, but come on. This is coolness.

“Another big selling point is that line2 saves money,” the TechNewsDaily article says, hitting the biggest selling point of all. The way it does this? “There's no need to get a whole other AT&T (News - Alert) contract (or Verizon) to use it. Even with the $10 a month cost of line2 it is still a savings.”

This summer TMC’s Susan J. Campbell wrote that the small business market stands to gain considerable value from VoIP, as they help to streamline communications and bring all activities onto one platform.

Google (News - Alert) Voice has gained considerable attention in the Small Business VoIP space, but Toktumi also offers many of the same benefits.

A recent Toktumi blog examined the differences between the two platforms to determine which one makes the most sense for Small Business VoIP. The big focus in this piece was the reality that Google Voice tends to be an optimal platform for consumers, but may not ideal for business users. This blog explores how Toktumi offers value over the Google Voice platform where business customers are concerned.

First, Toktumi Small Business VoIP includes a powerful auto-attendant. This is important for that small business that wants to appear larger and more equipped to compete in the market. And second, the Toktumi platform offers support for multiple employees receiving calls and managing their own dedicated lines. This is considered to be critical for any business operating with more than one person.
