British Sky Broadcasting Selects KIT Digital to Drive Online And Mobile Service

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Providing television service across the UK and Ireland, British Sky Broadcasting (Sky), announced that it has selected ioko, part of KIT digital, Inc., provider of software and technology services for multi-screen video delivery, to help in driving Sky Go, its multiplatform TV service.

In a release, Holly Knill, head of Sky Go, at BSkyB (News - Alert) said, "Our history of working together on innovative and compelling video services meant that ioko, now the KIT digital team, was the natural choice when it came to launching our new Sky Go service. We believe that this new service offers a true value-add for our customers, providing flexible access to content outside of the living room."

Sky Go, the latest offering from Sky has been developed as a single service which integrates the Sky Player, an online TV service, and Sky Mobile TV, the largest mobile TV service in UK. Existing Sky TV customers will be provided the new service free of charge, while new customers will have to pay a fee to avail this service.

Subscribers with iPhones and iPads, Mac, PC and Xbox 360 also have the option of registering any two devices of their choice, using which they can take advantage of a flexible access within the service for selecting channels and programs aired by Sky.

Sky's association with ioko began as early as 2005. The company helped Sky develop and build the Sky Player Platform, an over-the-top (OTT) TV platform. By creating the Sky Go service, Sky has effectively enhanced its back-end infrastructure to support content delivery to multiple iOS Apple (News - Alert) devices. Editors of the company will now be able to gain visibility and control over the entire service including controlling and managing delivery of content to multiple devices and channel descriptions. Furthermore, security enhancements to the platform also help in controlling delivery of content to subscribers over a limited number of devices.

Frederic Garnier, VP of strategic accounts, EMEA at KIT digital said, "Sky is at the cutting edge of the industry -- providing innovative services that meet customers' needs.   With this new service, Sky is enabling its customers to access content delivered whenever and wherever required through a simple to use and cost-effective service. Given our long-standing relationship with Sky, we are delighted to have played our part and helped to facilitate this change."
