Content delivery network company Akamai has announced a partnership with Telecom Italia (News - Alert) to offer its services in the country.

"Italy is an important and growing Internet market and provides significant opportunity for the adoption of media and cloud services,” Doug Tilford, senior vice president & general manager of Akamai (News - Alert) EMEA, said. “The partnership with Telecom Italia is an opportunity for the two companies to bring new and innovative services to market, providing the support and tools necessary to assist businesses inside the country and within the region."

The partnership will focus on Akamai’s ability to deliver high quality video to Telecom Italia’s customers. Akamai’s extensive content delivery network serves up video that’s geographically closest to the user, eliminating throughput problems.

Akamai has been a familiar name in URLs serving up content for years, but along with the growth of broadband has been a growth in video streaming. With plans for Netflix to expand in Italy, the demand is only going to grow even more in the future.

Telecom Italia will market the full range of Akamai’s services, including its well-known content acceleration and security. The carrier’s network will be directly connected to Akamai’s own extensive platform.

This will let Telecom Italia stay competitive with other carriers in a deregulated market where carriers have to compete on price and performance.
