ORBCOMM and Inmarsat Join Up To Provide Satellite-Based M2M

A vast majority of the M2M devices available today rely on terrestrial wireless communications to speak to other machines. This method of communication begs a question: What if we have to send one of these little critters to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, or any other area without any Wi-Fi or cellular networks?

While most countries have cellular carriers that do a great job of covering enough area to provide for most M2M applications, there are still some industrial operations that fall out of the reach of these carriers. Container management, for example, can be cumbersome if the vehicles delivering them pass through mountainous remote areas or oceans. That is, unless you're using satellites as a medium to deliver data.

ORBCOMM, a provider of M2M solutions, and Inmarsat (News - Alert), a global mobile satellite communications provider, have teamed up to bring improved satellite M2M services. The two companies would like to meet the demands of an ever-growing population of satellite M2M customers, and they see a way in which they can profit handsomely while providing much-needed services to this bunch.

Marc Eisenberg, CEO of ORBCOMM (News - Alert), spoke about the partnership, saying, “As the leader in satellite M2M, we are excited to team with Inmarsat, the industry's largest MSS player, to set the standard for satellite solutions in M2M. Our goal with Inmarsat is to create a compelling offering for the M2M industry by developing a truly innovative, scalable – and most importantly – a standard satellite-based global M2M platform. We want to make it as easy as possible for M2M solutions companies to use the most appropriate network for their unique application needs without having to invest huge amounts of development time and capital in each capability.”

The partnership will bring about a solution that promises cost-effective hardware options and flexibility in service pricing for all M2M customers.
