This collaborative effort will prove to significantly benefit Internet customers who use one of the two networks but desire to exchange a variety of information with customers using the other network.

With the goal of driving customer satisfaction rates through the roof (even before Santa lands there), the contract is being touted as a "bit-mile" peering agreement, ensuring that the exact same amount of volume of traffic is exchanged as well as the distance over which that traffic is carried by each network are equal.

"tw telecom supports this settlement-free Internet peering approach based on bit-mile balance as a model that assures the most efficient interconnection in the evolving Internet," added Harold Teets, tw telecom senior vice president of Network and Information Technologies. "This agreement will support high-quality service for our respective customers, and will keep the backbone cost burden balanced between our two networks."

Further, this effort will help to launch several interconnection locations between the two telecommunication providers as a preemptive measure to keep up with increasing traffic requirements.  This plan will in turn ramp up flexibility, performance and reliability for customers of both businesses.
