Globecomm Systems has announced that it has won a contract to provide wireless managed services in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The terms of the contract call on the company to provide CDMA-450 switching facilities for voice and data services to wireless operator subscribers and interconnected partners in Sierra Leone.

Thanks to the unique architecture, CDMA-450 radio network can be connected via satellite to Globecomm’s hosted mobile switch controller (MSC (News - Alert)) and value added services (VAS) in New York. Also, the network incorporates a WiMax network for additional connectivity throughout the city, according to company officials.

Andy Silberstein, senior vice president and general manager of services at Globecomm, said that the company’s hosted mobile core switch continues to help wireless carriers profitably introduce wireless technologies in developing markets without a major capital or operational investment.

“It also demonstrates Globecomm's value proposition by bringing our wireless managed services to Africa and addressing the strong data market for internet and private corporate VPN data networks,” Silberstein said.

Globecomm is a global provider of satellite-based managed network solutions. The company’s hosted switch platform now carries millions of minutes of voice traffic, hundreds of gigabytes of data traffic, for wireless operators from North America, to the Caribbean and now into Africa.

Company officials said that the hosted switch platform provides a 100-percent IP-based soft-switch architecture with a forward path to 4G/LTE (News - Alert) due to full redundancy for all major components.

The company maintains a dedicated power system in its Hauppauge, New York-based Network Operations Center in support of these switch platforms. Company officials said that engineers and technicians provide 24/7 network monitoring and customer support as well as redundant fiber circuits and generator systems support the Globecomm facility.

Earlier this month, Globecomm received a contract from a major media & entertainment company valued at $3.8 million.
