Multi-Tech (News - Alert) Systems is a provider of machine to machine (M2M) communications solutions and enables connectivity in more than 22 million devices worldwide. Its portfolio of gateways, routers and modems makes it easy to connect devices to networks globally. As the hype surrounding M2M and the Internet of Things (IoT) grows, Multi-Tech is definitely in the right place at the right time.
Chemring Technology Solutions (News - Alert), a provider of mobile data management solutions, demonstrated its SmartSwitch, an app that provides network operators with network management capabilities, at last week’s Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona. SmartSwitch integrates with Multi-Tech Systems’ M2M platform to enable network operators to maximize monetization opportunities for next-generation apps.
Mobile networks can actively promote free Wi-Fi with SmartSwitch and eliminate bill shock when travelling internationally. The application allows operators to send real-time policies that can simplify and automate the network selection process.
“To offer both the mobile network and the user a real benefit, SmartSwitch can connect the needs of the M2M application with the needs of the mobile network. It allows Multi-Tech’s M2M mobile devices to separate data into real-time and non-urgent classifications so that they use the wireless service at a time when the data cost is lower for the end-user and network less congested, enabling the operators to maximize service reliability,” said Ben Toner, incubation manager at Chemring Technology Solutions, in a statement.
SmartSwitch’s policy engine supports M2M applications by intelligently matching the priority of data to a mobile network’s preferred times and maximizing M2M system development opportunities without congesting mobile networks. SmartSwitch is application-aware, giving operators the ability to reduce congestion in known problem coverage areas and ensure traffic from value-added applications is not lost.
Rod Landers, CEO of Multi-Tech, said, “I’m really excited to see this technology getting deployed and we are very flattered that Chemring chose Multi-Tech’s products to demonstrate SmartSwitch at Mobile World Congress. We see this as an important tool for M2M applications and network operators to more efficiently manage their traffic and costs of service which will further accelerate growth in the Internet of Things.”
