Fifteen Years Later, TransNexus Still a Pioneer in VoIP Innovation

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

In 1997, TransNexus (News - Alert) was born, only to shortly thereafter become a VoIP software leader. Fifteen years later, the least cost routing company is still just as immersed in the industry, but has undoubtedly helped to change the VoIP landscape for the better.

February marks TransNexus’ 15th year of delivering quality VoIP network management solutions. It all started in the late 1990s, when the company partnered with Cisco (News - Alert) and 3Com to bring to market the Open Settlement Protocol (OSP), with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Today, adoption of OSP – an XML-based standard for VoIP routing discovery and accounting – continues to blossom, and the company’s OSP Toolkit project is now supported by an array of open source SIP projects, including Asterisk (News - Alert), FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, OpenSIPs, and SIP Router.

Only a few years later, Transnexus developed the first-ever peer-to-peer VoIP clearinghouse services, its ClearIP service is continuing to become a trusted certificate authority for secure routing authorization and accounting of direct VoIP peering among Internet telephony service providers. Then, in 2001, after much feedback from its major customers, the company transformed its business model from a service provider to a developer of software products specifically made for wholesale VoIP carriers.

Today, TransNexus is putting all its efforts to providing new features to the ever-changing IP communications market. Jim Dalton (News - Alert), CEO and founder of TransNexus, attributes his company’s long-time success to a grouping of superior customer service and innovation.

“Customers found TransNexus because they needed solutions for their VoIP network that did not exist,” said Dalton in a prepared statement. “Keeping up with new customer requirements is our biggest challenge and the best part of our job.” As an innovator in the field of VoIP peering, TransNexus has been awarded 14 patents for unique features offered by the TransNexus software.

“Customer service is our first business goal,” he continued. “We start every business relationship with a free evaluation trial that includes solution design, implementation and training. We want our customers fully satisfied with the TransNexus solution in production before they have to commit to purchase.”

Just last month, TransNexus answered the call for an ongoing issue of fraudulent call termination plaguing the telecommunications and VoIP industry by releasing NexOSS 5.0, a VoIP-based least cost routing software packaging a fraud detection module. NexOSS 5.0 works in conjunction with TransNexus’ OSPrey routing server in order to deliver to VoIP carriers least cost routing, number portability, quality of service controls, traffic analysis and billing reports. According to TransNexus officials, the inclusion of these fraud detection features guarantees an additional layer of protection and analysis within the solution.

So, what’s next for TransNexus?

“We think the industry is on the verge of creating new business models that will drive adoption of fresh services, such as high definition audio and video services,” said Dalton. “We are eager to provide the software that will enable those new business models.”
