Carrier VoIP and IMS Equipment Market Enjoys Growth

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Growth has been reported in the carrier VoIP and IMS equipment market according to new findings from Infonetics Research (News - Alert). The market research firm released excerpts on market share and forecast for its Service Provider VoIP and IMS Equipment and Subscribers report.

According to Diane Myers, principal analyst for the firm covering UC, VoIP and IMS, the carrier VoIP and IMS equipment market ended its three year run of annual declines. The market demonstrated a 9 percent growth the previous year thanks to strong IMS sales. And, while it’s still considered early for IMS applications and equipment for LTE (News - Alert), there are a handful of operators putting in orders for a positive impact on revenue.

Myers suggests that these findings are really just a taste of what to expect over the next few years. Wireless operators are expected to step into voice over LTE (VoLTE) and RCS will begin to roll out at a rapid pace across multiple regions.

A closer look at the highlights from this report shows that total revenue in the fourth quarter for carrier VoIP and IP multimedia subsystems equipment passed $800 million. The key driver was a strong core of voice application servers, IMS and IP softswitches. Overall declines were felt in legacy softswitch and trunk media gateways, which were offset by a jump in IMS equipment sales just over 40 percent of total revenue from IMS and VoIP in 2012.

Even with traditional softswitch declines, some operators are replacing early technologies with newer softswitches, electing not to switch to IMS at the present time. The strongest growth overall, however, was found in the Caribbean and Latin America region at 37 percent. The leader in the VoIP and IMS market once again was Huawei, claiming 1/5 of the total global market. The second place vendor switched names as Alcatel Lucent (News - Alert) knocked GENBAND to seize the number two placement.

One company leveraging key opportunities in the softswitch space is REVE Systems. Its iTel Switch Plus is a hosted offering ideal for small and medium sized IP telephony platform providers, yet also delivers equitable benefits for carrier grade VoIP service providers seeking to enjoy the benefits associated with the opportunities in the market, without monitoring and maintaining a softswitch.

REVE Systems’ success in the market is due in part to its ability to focus on IP-based communications and offer a wide range of products and solutions that address the growing communications needs in the market today. With offerings from backbone infrastructure to peripheral products, REVE Systems maintains a pulse on the industry, developing solutions that meet today’s needs, while anticipating trends that will change communications tomorrow.
