Wireless snom 820 and 870 VoIP Desktop Phones Certified Interoperable with Aruba Wireless LANs

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Aruba, a provider of 802.11n wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions and snom technology, a developer and manufacturer of advanced voice over IP phones for enterprise and residential markets, have announced that the wireless snom 820 and 870 VoIP color touch-screen desktop phones have been certified interoperable with Aruba 802.11n wireless LANs.

This certification will allow the desktop phones to be joined with cost-effective WiFi (News - Alert) networks.

In a press release, snom said that its 800 series VoIP desktop phones offer “extraordinary elegance and performance” and combine both latest technology and unique snom features. The phones merge mature VoIP technology and design and are like a prelude of a new masterpiece in VoIP technology. The wideband technology used in the handset captures more than double of the spectrum of voice frequencies that by standard phones offering audio quality comparable to a FM radio.

The phones’ WLAN allows users to install the phone in any surrounding; phones are prepared for any option whether it is Power over plug with WLAN or Power over Ethernet.

Multi-use networks share wireless infrastructure among different voice, data and video applications, and are increasingly popular because they eliminate redundancy, enhance user mobility, and significantly lower deployment and operating costs. Low-cost, energy-efficient WiFi networks are now more preferred to costly wired Ethernet infrastructure, according to both companies.

Network ‘rightsizing’ (or scaling down) lowers recurring costs and energy usage and migrating desk phones from wired to wireless connections promises to boost rightsizing savings even further, while delivering the freedom to locate and move phones at will.

Aruba has stated that though users have access to single- and dual-mode Wi-Fi enabled handsets they still prefer the desktop phones’ form factor and the features such as one-finger dialing, high-quality speakerphone, large information display, and an easily cradled handset usually found on wired desk phones. Until now enterprise desk phones have required a wired Ethernet port, and typically a Power over Ethernet power source, too. With snom’s fully featured, wireless SIP desk phones, enterprises can now transition into wireless networks and still deploy their preferred desktop phones.

The snom 800 series VoIP phone have been compliance-tested by Avaya (News - Alert) for compatibility with Avaya IP Office 5.0, and features a large high-resolution TFT color display, integrated XML browser, speakerphone with interference noise suppression, secure VPN, five-way conferencing, multiple ringtones, and up to twelve different SIP identities.

Mike Storella (News - Alert), snom’s director of business development, said that snom has been a pioneer in offering WLAN-enabled desktop business phones and their solution is the ideal replacement for the wired desk phones across a wide range of enterprise applications.

Aruba validated the interoperability of snom’s 820 and 870 WiFi desk phones across both its 802.11n wireless LANs and its Virtual Branch Networking solution. The VBN solution was tested together with an Avaya IP-PBX (News - Alert), meaning that they now have an interoperable solution for campus WiFi, fixed telecommuter, remote call center and branch office applications.

Polycom (News - Alert) and Aruba drove VoIP over WLAN and Aruba branched into remote IP communications market with VBN solution.
