Polycom Bridges Gap Between Desktop VoIP, Mobile Phones
By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Polycom has announced its new VVX D60 cordless handset, aimed at employees who move around the workplace.

“Collaboration technology for the workplace of the future is not a one-size-fits-all proposition,” said Ashan Willy, senior vice president of product management and worldwide systems engineering at Polycom (News - Alert). “Businesses of all sizes need solutions that integrate into natural work flows.  The Polycom VVX D60 Wireless Handset is ideal for environments where users need to stay connected, whether they are at their desk or elsewhere around their workspace.”

The wireless SIP handset is designed to complement Polycom’s existing VVX desktop phones and Unified Communications (News - Alert) software by adding the convenience of a cordless phone. The device resembles a typical cordless phone, with a keypad and a high-resolution screen. The DECT (News - Alert) phone can support up to four calls at once with up to 10 hours of talk time.

Modern VoIP solutions make it possible to route calls to mobile phones, making it tempting to use BYOD smartphones. Even though this feature is very convenient for people out of the office, cellular reception can be spotty inside buildings. In a business situation, call reliability and clarity is extremely important. Wi-Fi calling-capable smartphones are just coming onto the market and are still a niche feature.

The VVX D60 bridges the gap between reliable desktop SIP phones and mobile phones. Users don’t have to be chained to their desks and have the freedom to move around the office while making calls reliably.

Polycom is targeting the phone toward retail, small businesses and administrative personnel, all groups that can benefit from mobility.

Other useful features include noise cancellation, echo cancellation and high voice quality. The device can be managed along with Polycom’s other phones using a web-based management console. Polycom claims that the phone can be set up in a matter of minutes without having to upgrade the call control platform.

The VVX D60 will be available this December.
