Cadence Debuts First 25G Ethernet Verification IP
By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Cadence Design Systems (News - Alert), Inc., a company specializing in global electronic design innovation for integrated circuits and electronics, recently rolled out new Verification IP (VIP) supporting the new 25-Gigabit (25G) Ethernet specification.

The new 25G Ethernet VIP is the brain child of 25G Ethernet Consortium, an open organization to all third parties who wish to participate as members to enable the transmission of Ethernet frames at 25 or 50 Gigabit per second (Gbps). This consortium is working towards supporting an industry-standard, interoperable Ethernet specification that will drastically enhance performance and cuts down interconnect cost.

Brad Booth, secretary of 25G Ethernet Consortium, said, "As one of the Consortium's early members, Cadence is enabling further adoption of the 25G Ethernet specification and 50G definition through the delivery of verification IP."

The 25G Ethernet specification covers the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3 standard to include operation at 25 Gb/s over copper cables and it also offers support for both MAC and PHY designs.

Many companies rely on Cadence VIP to verify thousands of designs, from IP blocks to full systems on chip (SoCs).  Cadence VIP comes with a multi-language testbench interface with full access to the source code to make it easy to integrate VIP with user’s testbench.  Optimized cores for simulation and simulation-acceleration allow users to choose the verification approach that best meets their objectives.

"25G Ethernet is an important new technology that is satisfying the ever-increasing need for scale in the datacenter in a cost-effective manner," said Martin Lund, senior vice president of the IP Group at Cadence.

Lund said that their company will continue to invest in VIP that accelerates industry adoption of new interface technology. “Being first to market with VIP enables our customers to be first to market with their next-generation products, Lund added.

Cadence VIP also backs the 50G definition built in 25G Ethernet and this system promises to provide 2X (News - Alert) port fall and a 25 percent bandwidth enhancement compared to 40G.

Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Cadence has sales offices, design centers, and research facilities around the world to serve the global electronics industry.
