Small Businesses, Startups Can Benefit from IP Phones
By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Small businesses and startups have unique challenges when it comes to effective communications. Because they do not operate the same way large-scale businesses do, their needs, while perhaps less complex, need to keep up with their larger counterparts in the competition.

Small businesses usually don’t have large cash reserves, dedicated research departments, fully-staffed IT functions, strategic planning functions, etc., to address challenges or opportunities, so their resources are extremely limited. On top of limited resources, small businesses find challenges in marketing, finding a work-life balance and managing their back office.

IP telephony can help in that it offers affordable, feature-rich solutions that continue to increase as the small business looks to streamline communications, improve collaboration, and support mobility, all while saving a buck.

The major benefit for small businesses and startups is the ability to add features that have only been affordable or available to large businesses. VoIP and Internet telephony are usually also more cost-effective when looking at long-term operating costs due to lower monthly fees and much lower costs to connect and complete calls.

In addition to phone calls, IP systems enable communications such as videoconferencing and international calling that add flexibility to the type of business that can be handled over the phone. Of course, using the right handsets is imperative when going with an IP solution to take advantage of these features that are crucial to small business success.

Small business IP phones are capable of far more than simply handling calls. When these IP phones are connected to a telephony system on an Internet Protocol (IP) network, your small business can access the same tools as a large enterprise.

IP phones offer features to serve everyone from floor staff and cubicle workers to executives and remote employees. Your people stay productive and enjoy access to voice and data communications wherever they are while keeping small business costs down.
