IP Phones: The Desktop Phone Is Here to Stay

While many of us are used to our hard-wired phones and the reliability they offer in communications, this channel does not offer easy integration into the all-IP network. A number of companies have already made the move to deploy IP phones in order to leverage VoIP capabilities in the enterprise, yet the recession halted some of that spending.

Now, according to this recent snom blog, a report recently issued by one of In-Stat’s (News - Alert) top telecom and VoIP analysts, Norm Bogen, suggests that as the economy turns around, sales of IP phones will grow on a global basis. The report by Bogen offers insight into the opportunities in worldwide sales for IP phones vendors, suggesting that momentum actually picked up in 2010. This growth is expected to continue on through 2015.

In fact, worldwide consumer and business units of IP phones are expected to exceed 40 million by 2015. This demand, according to Bogen, is being driven by the movement towards IP telephony systems. The report also suggests that while there is a move toward the IP PBX (News - Alert), it is not decreasing the demand for desktop phones, or cordless DECT phones in favor of softphones or PCs with headsets.

While there has been a sharp rise in smartphone usage, it too has not displaced the demand for IP phones. There have been some over the years who have suggested that PCs with headsets and softphones would emerge the industry leaders over desktop phones, but that doesn’t appear to be the case now, or projected as the turn in the future. The majority of business customers don’t want to give up their desktop phone.

It is true that business communications today is about more than just a phone, fax and e-mail account.  The multitude of real-time applications available from Twitter to Unified Communications (News - Alert) have enabled users to connect, communicate and collaborate wherever they are and for whatever reason. The fact of the matter, however, is that the desktop phone is here to stay.

For those who love their IP phones, this is good news as the future holds significant potential for the desktop phone. They might be connected to something more elaborate than an office telephone system or they might be used for unified communications and voice drive applications, but the possibilities are virtually endless.

Even more promising for snom is the fact that the report highlighted its cordless DECT phones in the discussion. The company just launched the newest generation of DECT phone, the snom m9 at the ITEXPO (News - Alert) show earlier this month.
