You don’t have to be young and hip to adapt to the digital age. In response to the growing number of senior citizens now using digital phone services, Rescue Alert of California, a medical alert service provider, released a solution for seniors switching to voice over IP (VoIP) phone services while using a medical alert system. The Rescue Alert of California senior alert system is now fully compatible with both analog and digital phone lines.

In order to save money, a growing number of seniors have switched from traditional phone services to bundled packages through their Internet service providers in order to save money on services.

"One of the big problems is that consumers who switch to VoIP service, and without knowing it, may have significantly reduced the reliability their medical alerts, which are designed to help them remain safe and independent," says Lindsey Brewster of Rescue Alert of California. There are a few problems with VoIP phone service that can cause no communication or intermittent communication between your medical alert monitoring system and the central monitoring station. Depending on your Internet service provider and your VoIP service provider (they don’t have to be the same) makes it very difficult for equipment manufactures to make equipment that will be reliable on all networks and with all VoIP carriers.

Another problem with VoIP is that it requires that the modem for your Internet service and the VoIP equipment all to have battery back-up in case of a power failure, otherwise you (or your medical alert monitoring system) could not make a call.  

However, VoIP is here for a reason. Some VoIP services offer features and services that are not available with a traditional phone, or are available but only for an additional fee. You may be able to avoid paying for both a broadband connection and a traditional telephone line.

The latest release from Rescue Alert of California is the MXD base unit, launched in April of 2012, and is the first in the industry to be completely VoIP and traditional telephone system compatible. The base unit is designed and fully compatible with analog, digital and more recently cellular home phone services ensuring zero transmission delays and hassle-free usage.
