Need a New IP PBX? Check Out Grandsteam's GXE5028 in the Skype Store

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

TMC (News - Alert) has learned that IP multimedia phone manufacturer Grandstream just scored an exclusive spot in the Skype Store for its "attractively priced" GXE5028 IP PBX (News - Alert).

Specifically, the GXE5028 supports distributed IP communications, intelligent UC, advanced application integration and popular PBX features like auto-attendant, ACD, voice mail, a conference bridge, fax server, robust dial plan and hybrid FX0/FXS.

Gadget reviewer and TMC tech guy Tom Keating (News - Alert), CTO, VP and founder of TMC Labs, offered a bit of feedback in his blog:

"I reviewed another model in the series called the GXE5024 which you can check out here," Keating said. "The only differences being the number of conferences 2 (GXE5024) or 4 (GXE5028) and up to 12 (GXE5024) or 20 (GXE5028) simultaneous participants from PSTN trunks, SIP trunks or internal extensions."

Calling the Skype (News - Alert) store win "nice" for Grandstream, Keating said the big question is "do people buy IP-PBXs online and not through a channel where they can get support? I think some SMBs might be willing to purchase IP-PBXs online if they have the internal technical know-how, but for bigger IP-PBX systems, I don't see online purchasing happening."

In March, Grandstream kicked off the annual VoiceCon show in Orlando with an announcement that its GXE IP PBX is compatible with the Skype for SIP open beta program, making it the third VoIP vendor to test interoperable in the program, following Cisco (News - Alert) and Shoretel.

In an exclusive podcast with TMCnet just days before the announcement, Khris Kendrick, senior director of business development, discussed the interoperability testing - and the significance of the news.

"Well, it's pretty huge for us," Kendrick told TMCnet, adding that achieving interoperability took about a year. "As you know, Skype is the biggest network on the earth. And Grandstream's participation in this in testing interoperability and getting certified is going to be huge for Grandstream because we have products that fit the right price point for Skype users and business users throughout the world."
