Thuraya (News - Alert) Telecommunications Company recently introduced its first ruggedized satellite broadband terminal, called the Thuraya IP Commander.

Officials said that new terminal has been developed in collaboration with U.S.-based SRT Wireless, using MIL-SPEC components.

Commercially available from all Thuraya Service Partners in Q3, 2014, the Thuraya IP Commander enables mission-critical voice and data connectivity in mobile or stationary applications in the most extreme and remote environments.

It is well suited for military and governmental operations, as well as other applications including land mobile, energy and mining.

In a statement, Randy Roberts, vice president of innovation at Thuraya, said: "The launch of IP Commander demonstrates our commitment to deepen Thuraya's IP broadband portfolio. As global defense and infrastructure budgets shrink, the IP Commander will prove to be a vital element in the communication strategy of government users.”

IP Commander offers vital communications at high speeds, which is considered essential for C4ISR, blue-force tracking, logistics management and tactical command. It is Thuraya's only ruggedized vehicular terminal that is capable of achieving streaming IP speeds of up to 384kbps, as well as user-definable asymmetric streaming functionality.

Asher Faredi, product manager of land data at Thuraya, said, "Thuraya is proud to serve the diverse requirements of over 30 government entities globally. In developing IP Commander, we listened to our government users' feedback to deliver a product that offers voice and data capabilities, as well as the ability to withstand the toughest conditions."

Company officials confirmed that the package comprises a rugged voice handset, offering clear and uninterrupted voice connectivity across Thuraya's satellite network.

Last month, TMCnet reported that Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a major Mobile Satellite Services operator and ViaSat (News - Alert) Inc. have signed a partnership agreement to develop and launch a dedicated Machine-to-Machine platform.
