Ubiquisys (News - Alert), the developer of 3G and LTE small cells, is demonstrating a new generation of smart cells, a new type of small cell, based on Intel architecture at Mobile World Congress.

Officials with Ubiquisys said that “smart cells” with powerful cloud computing platforms will cut backhaul costs and provide mobile users with a richer, faster and safer online experience.

Company officials pointed out that when added to a 3G/LTE/WiFi small cell base station, they add massive processing power and storage at the edge of the network, opening new opportunities for operators, end users and application developers.

According to company officials, the Ubiquisys smart cell modules feature the second generation Intel (News - Alert) Core processor CPU family with data plane hardware accelerators.

There are variants based on Intel Core processors for public space hotspots and large enterprise, and Intel Atom processor-based variants for SOHO and residential environments.

“Smart cells are the future – a sophisticated combination of small cell base stations and powerful computing platforms that deliver more than the sum of their parts,” said Chris Gilbert (News - Alert), CEO, Ubiquisys, in a statement. “We’re now reaping the rewards of our strategic agreement with Intel to enable commercial products that bring the IP communications cloud closer to mobile users and machines,” said Gilbert.

Rose Schooler, general manager of Intel’s communications infrastructure division, said that the increased demand from data services is causing rapid evolution of the radio access network and this delivery aligns with the focus of collaborative efforts.

Schooler said that with the integration of Intel second generation Core processors, Ubiquisys has been able to move cloud computing platforms closer to mobile devices to reduce costs and provide consumers with a richer, faster and more secure mobile online experience.

Ubiquisys is engaging with third party application developers such as Intrinsyc and Edge Datacoms to release the first applications for smart cells. These include-Backhaul optimization; Video optimization; User protection and Fast upload.

In other industry news, TMC (News - Alert), a global, integrated media company, has named AireSpring’s MPLS Mesh as a recipient of the 2011 INTERNET TELEPHONY Product of the Year Award.

Officials with AireSpring, a provider of IP communications solutions, said that MPLS Mesh makes secure multi-location networking cost effective and provides for greater national coverage.

“I am happy to grant AireSpring with a Product of the Year Award. The editors of INTERNET TELEPHONY have verified that MPLS Mesh displays quality and innovation plus provides real solutions in the marketplace,” stated Rich Tehrani (News - Alert), CEO, TMC, in a statement.
