Sonera Turns to Nuage for Hybrid WAN Operations

With wide area networking (WAN) operations stepping up throughout several different sectors of business, there's a clear demand for helping better kick off hybrid WAN operations, the combination of software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and physical WAN systems. Recently, Sonera—a subsidiary of Telia located in Finland—took steps to augment its hybrid WAN operations by bringing in the Nuage line of virtualized network services (VNS).

Nuage is a product of Nokia (News - Alert), who is already well-known in the networking space as being one of the principal architects of 5G. With Nuage tools in place, meanwhile, Sonera will be able to offer a wide array of services to enterprise customers throughout Europe. The sheer depth and breadth of Nuage's offerings was one of the biggest reasons Sonera cited in making the move.

With Nuage tools on hand, Sonera will be able to open up a complete SD-WAN orchestrator and software-defined networking (SDN) controller, tools with particular value in hybrid WAN operations. Plus, Sonera can take Nuage systems and use these to create more customer-facing applications like self-service portals.

Augmenting operations in hybrid WAN is especially useful for a company like Sonera, whose customers are often current DataNet customers that are planning to move sites on top of the Internet, saving the MPLS-VPN arrangements for data centers or similarly larger sites. That means a clear demand for hybrid WAN materials, and a value in providing those tools for Sonera.

A Sonera rep commented “In our view, the technology’s key strengths are the way it takes into account legacy networking and interworking with those, especially MPLS-VPN, and thus is very well suited for a telco, whose strengths lie in the same area, as a technology platform to  build SD-WAN with.”

A company that can expand its repertoire is less likely to fall prey to changes in the marketplace. Sure, there's something to be said for specialization, and too diffuse a focus is just as likely to fail from an insufficiently diffuse one as it's impossible to focus on too many goals at once, but being able to offer more in a comparatively narrow space is worth looking into. By bringing in Nuage, Sonera has offered a few more tools in the space and made itself a bit more attractive a proposition, the kind of thing that could be valuable when making buying decisions.

Just a little extra value can be a great thing, and Sonera will likely find that much out itself directly. Its competitors, meanwhile, may be in a mad dash to try and match this new development, so hopefully Sonera will take advantage and seek new business.
