The idea of partnering with a third party company to secure hosted PBX (News - Alert) connectivity may be exciting enough to get you looking around for the right solution. The challenge then becomes finding the right partner who will listen to your needs and provide the right-sized solution with optimal connectivity, capability and support.

One of the key benefits to hosted PBX is the idea that there are no upfront costs for deployment and typically no upfront costs to get the solution running on your system. As such, there generally isn’t a requirement that the organization deploy an in-house PBX, other hardware or software to support communications.

The most compelling argument in favor of hosted PBX tends to be the shift from capital expenditure (CAPEX) to operating expense (OPEX (News - Alert)). It also lends itself well to predictable pricing. Companies know up-front what they pay for the service and remain unchanged unless the number of users grows over time. Plus, the company doesn’t have to employ in-house staff to support and maintain the system, eliminating costs associated with the IT team.

For the ever-expanding operation, hosted PBX allows for easy scalability and flexibility. Plus, administration rights through any web browser means easy remote management of the system. All services, features and functions can be turned off or an as employee counts change, specific services are added or deleted, capabilities are expanded and more. Users can also manage their own profiles, adjusting Find Me / Follow Me numbers, changing PINs to access voicemail, modifying email address destinations for voicemails and more.

Uptime is another key consideration as companies can’t afford to lose access to communications. Hosted PBX solution has an extremely high level of uptime to support standard business processes on a daily basis, while also supporting business continuity plans following a disaster, power outage or other unforeseen event. If such an event occurs and operations within the primary location are impossible, remote operations can be set up and the phone system accessed through a browser, getting the company back online in minutes.

Finally, one of the key advantages to implementing hosted PBX is the lower total cost of ownership when compared with the in-house system. The small business often doesn’t have access to the resources necessary to support a robust system to full capacity. With the hosted approach, they not only control spending through lower payments, but also gain access to full-featured solutions. In the end, the small business looks like the big provider through access to the right technology. It’s the best of both worlds.
