Hosted PBX Features? There's More Than You Think

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

What is PBX (News - Alert) and why does it matter? For one, it’s the hub of your phone system. PBX stands for “private branch exchange,” and it is responsible for switching calls between users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain number of external phone lines. In a hosted or cloud model, there is a nominal investment in telephone sets that are compatible with VoIP, but there are no operating, maintenance or upgrading costs to worry about. Virtual PBX allows businesses added growth flexibility, regardless of size. It also has a lot of features you may not be aware of.

A hosted PBX is a good choice when a company or organization can’t be bothered with complicated phone systems. There is no longer any need to worry about scalability and upgrades due to capacity requirements. Managing line cards, trunk cards or space in your capacity is not required. Hosted PBX providers handle capacity, performance and configuration of the total VoIP system.

Using a hosted PBX, you can ditch the office and go remote. Overhead costs are severely cut because businesses can populate their business workforce with home or remote workers and integrate workers that travel or work from branch offices. This opens up the possibility of specialized professionals, regardless of distance.

Most hosted PBX systems include a Web portal that let you turn features on and off, manage messages and configure your phone from any web browser. These systems can even allow you to manage your entire system from your desktop, changing things like operating hours, workstation names and more. It gives you easy control over your calls and messages.

Other features, like call recording can help with training while mobility allows for workers on the go to continue doing their thing while traveling. Multiple offices, message waiting indicators, software integration, and metrics all mean productivity is exponentially increased.

Basic telephone services have gone by the way side for businesses. Decision makers can obtain a complete office telephone solution with virtual numbers, find-me, follow-me capability, voicemail for every employee and the ability to work from anywhere at any time, all thanks to hosted PBX.
