Let's Pause to Consider How Much Business Has Changed-and the Opportunities Still Out There

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Amongst our constant flurry of tweets and email and social media, let’s pause to consider how business has changed in the past 20 years. It is easy to get so wrapped up in the activity of the moment that we forget how it used to be.

The Internet has dramatically changed our world. Not just social media, which certainly has connected to others faster and enabled us to share information more quickly. In the last 20 years research has also gotten a lot easier; just think about what it used to entail to book a flight and how that process has now been made easy.

Another big change in business that is easy to forget is life in the cubicle.

For many workers, a day job in a cubicle still is a reality. But that’s changing in a hurry, and some analysts even put the number of workers who telecommute all or some of the time at more than 40 percent.

But even for those who still spend most of their work time in the office, the game has changed. Most of us now also check email and handle business from our smartphone after work. And who among us takes a vacation these days without “checking in” with the office at least once or twice? We’ve become so used to being able to perform work from wherever there is a mobile device and Internet connection, we are starting to forget what it was like to only be able to work within an office environment.

Calling also has changed dramatically in the past 20 years. There used to be a time when we had to answer the phone when it rang, and when this necessity of being by the phone tethered us.

Now we have mobile phones and VoIP, however. With mobile VoIP, it now is possible to have our phone calls follow us even when our cell phone dies. The same call can route to our office phone, follow us on the go by reaching our cell phone, and call our home phone at night (if we let it). We’re always able to take calls nowadays, which changes the nature of calling and our relationship to it fundamentally.

These are huge changes in how business runs. Not only does reflecting on these changes help put things in perspective, but it also reminds us of the opportunities still ahead. Are we fully leveraging the mobility in our world today? Are we exploiting mobile VoIP to the fullest? Are there business opportunities that we haven’t yet seized because these changes have come so fast?

I think the answer is almost certainly no. No, we have not fully embraced and taken advantage of these changes in our world yet. We might be living in a new business reality, but there’s still much opportunity to squeeze from these changes.

Will your business be one of the firms that seizes the moment?
