How to Extend the Capabilities of the Hosted Softswitch to Mobile Users

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In the world of communications, we want high quality, great support and instant connections. At the same time, we also want these things delivered at a low cost. For many organizations that means moving to hosted softswitch technology. When you also need to account for mobile employees, why not leverage both mobile and VoIP?

Employees who have to be in the field and interacting with clients need access to the network, their emails, applications and so much more. They also need a way to interact through voice and video that doesn’t impair the brand representation. With a hosted softswitch, you can extend the capabilities of the desk phone to the employee in the field, providing them with access to the same tools and assets to which they have become accustomed.

So why not check out a few apps that allow for free calling on a mobile device? Viber is one such option that allows for free calling whether communications take place nationally or internationally. The app is free, quick and easy to install and it transfers from Wi-Fi to 3G/Edge networking without losing service. It functions across all platforms and the recipient of the call does not have to have Viber to answer. This can add a cost to the call, but it doesn’t prevent the communication.

Most of us are familiar with Skype (News - Alert) as it truly paved the way for VoIP for consumers. Now owned by Microsoft (News - Alert), the platform has its devotees and those who would rather use a traditional rotary phone than launch a Skype conversation. If you’re looking for free video calling on the go, however, the platform is proven. Now that mobile carriers will allow its use across their networks, it’s a viable option to consider.

Many a mobile user has tried Magic Jack as it allows the user to turn a home phone into a mobile VoIP phone. Extending this capability on the move is the Magic App. Users can leverage a mobile device to allow for free internal calls in North America or cheap calls overseas. Google Hangouts, on the other hand, is known as one of the most accessible in terms of mobile VoIP, especially across Android (News - Alert) devices.

While a number of other options do exist, the important point is to first leverage the hosted softswitch internally so as to extend the flexibility, scalability and cost savings associated with VoIP across all platforms. Once it’s firmly in place, you’re ready to support mobile VoIP so those in the field have the access they need.
