It's 2014. Make Way for Mobile VoIP

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Now that we’ve entered a new year, we will start to see how and why we consume the technologies that we do, setting new trends as said technologies evolve and become part of our every day processes. As mobility has paved the way for newer services, and with the proliferation of mobile devices and savvier applications, we can expect to see mobile VoIP become an important technology in 2014.

Analysts and experts agree that as businesses look to increase efficiency while cutting costs, not to mention move away from rising mobile phone costs, long contracts and traditional plans will be a thing of the past. Much like VoIP providers, mobile VoIP service providers will begin to bundle their services, making it easier for businesses to make the move towards a more mobile-centric communications system.

Toronto-based VoIP provider Epik Networks (News - Alert) predicts that traditional phone systems are on the way out, making room for more evolved, more efficient VoIP systems.

“Traditional phone systems and rigid carrier plans are on their way out, certainly for smart businesses across North America,” said Claudio Nespeca, VP Operations & Marketing at Epik in a statement. “The benefits and advantages of VOIP are now well known and widespread with early adopters giving way to mainstream businesses. Like the traditional phone before it, VoIP has become the nervous system of the business world.”

Even analysts at In-Stat (News - Alert) predicted in 2011 that mobile VoIP was expected to reach 139 million users by 2014.

Will mobile VoIP soar in the New Year? Let’s consider some stats.

There are 6.8 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide, estimates The International Telecommunication Union. That’s 96 percent of the world’s population. According to a survey from Sprint (News - Alert), business professionals value their smartphones over their morning ‘Cup o’ Joe.’ Meanwhile Cisco had said that there will be more mobile devices than actual people by the end of 2013.

The bottom line? Mobile devices have flooded the market so it only makes sense that mobile VoIP will follow suit – especially as businesses look to decrease costs, stay in touch with their mobile workforce and improve overall efficiency.

Because mobile VoIP offers the potential for unlimited voice calls for far less than traditional mobile voice plans, it would behoove service providers to attract and retain customers with this technology in 2014.
