VoIP and IMS Markets Still Growing Strong

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

Entrepreneurs looking for a business opportunity might find the recent Infonetics Research (News - Alert) report of interest.

The market research firm released its forecast and preliminary analysis of the VoIP and IMS markets for the second quarter of 2013. The overall finding: It is a good time to be in the VoIP and IMS equipment business.

A typically strong quarter, the Q2 of this year saw the global service provider VoIP and IMS equipment market grow by 30 percent sequentially, to $936 million.

Growth happened just about everywhere on the planet, with all major geographical regions seeing growth in the market, noted Infonetics. This includes North America, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), Asia Pacific and Latin America.

LTE (News - Alert) continues to play a positive role in the growth. In North American, LTE-related activity grew by 78 percent year-over-year.

“IMS equipment has officially moved into an LTE and voice-over-LTE world, and there’s no going back now,” notes Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC and IMS at Infonetics Research. “In the second quarter we saw this impact spending on session border controllers and IMS core equipment for VoLTE access and interconnection (LTE to 3G) buildouts.”

Though LTE- and VoLTE-related equipment sales are growing, the market will continue to be lumpy from quarter to quarter, added Myers.

Companies that service the VoIP market are positioned well to take advantage of this growth.

One firm placed well is REVE Systems, which offers a number of VoIP-related solutions including its iTel Switch Plus, a carrier-grade softswitch that comes with an integrated billing solution and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. It is designed to suit VoIP service providers with retail and wholesale operations.

One of the company’s flagship products, its iTel Mobile Dialer Express, allows service providers to offer mobile VoIP. Instead of the operator having its customers use Skype (News - Alert) and other over-the-top services such as the popular Line app, iTel Mobile Dialer Express lets operators release a branded mobile dialer of their own to cannibalize this over-the-top usage and keep customers using the operator’s services.

If a customer is going to use VoLTE, at least with iTel Mobiel Dialer Express it can come from the operator, not a third party.

The mobile dialer also has a wide range of devices it works on, including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and, of course, iPhone and Android (News - Alert) operating systems.

The hottest topics in VoIP will be covered during ITEXPO (News - Alert) Las Vegas this week at Mandalay Bay, Aug. 26-29.
