Why the Hosted Softswitch is the Better Choice

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sending voice communications over the Internet connection is gaining in adoption numbers as companies everywhere recognize the cost and efficiency benefits associated with this communications platform. While a number of organizations have adopted their own approach to VoIP, there are still others who need a hosted approach to maximize the benefits.

The hosted softswitch ensures the organization enjoys the perks of VoIP, without the headaches. In fact, this option is so appealing that VoIP services are rapidly growing. According to Infonetics (News - Alert), residential and business VoIP services hit $63 billion in 2012, an increase of 9 percent from 2011.

The appealing benefits to VoIP include a reduction in capital investments when the service is supported by a managed vendor, and the flexibility of an agile solution. Businesses can scale their VoIP services up or down according to demand. As companies merge, acquire new brands and diversify, however, the need to improve the quality of service and meet customer expectations intensifies.

This is where the hosted softswitch makes a difference. No company can afford to deliver less than stellar quality on a call. If something goes wrong in the VoIP connection and the system is managed in-house, the whole platform may go down. If the service is instead delivered by a managed service provider, uptime is on them, according to the parameters of the Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Plus, the voice packets being sent over the Internet connection may fight for bandwidth space with data packets. A managed provider can work with the business to determine the priority over the network connection to ensure voice quality doesn’t shift when data is transmitted. Fortunately, service providers have invested in the technologies necessary to support a boost in performance and ensure optimization of the connection.

To achieve faster connectivity, there are a number of companies that are employing Broadband Bonding. This method blends various Internet lines together to form a single connection. The resulting connection provides faster connectivity as it draws on the sum of all lines involved, as well as the intelligent management of any latency within the tunnel. The solution proves to be cost effective even in larger environments where a firm may have multiple branches throughout the world.

With a hosted softswitch solution, the speed and reliability is dependent upon the provider, who is then also responsible for the monitoring of the service to ensure SLAs are met. REVE Systems offers a hosted softswitch that is both reliable and robust, supporting optimal performance from end-to-end. And, with an integrated billing option, customers can easily rebrand the solution and extend to their own customers, enjoying the best of both worlds.
