Moving the communications solutions in your office to an alternative platform may seem like a daunting task, but if it can deliver at least 43 percent in savings, it may be worth the challenge.
A Siemens Enterprise (News - Alert) Communications study, featured in this Telecom Lead report, found that pure IP-communications can provide the enterprise with 43 percent in savings over traditional PBX (News - Alert) infrastructures.
Enterprises today are rapidly adopting cloud-based technology, such as the hosted softswitch, to support the increased drive toward the mobile workforce. And while the migration to a Unified Communications (News - Alert) platform offers significant promise, a number of companies are hitting delays when it comes to staff training and headcount issues.
A hosted softswitch in a hybrid environment can help mitigate some of this risk and protect the existing technologies and processes. The most common approach for a hybrid deployment is to run IP communications next to legacy PBX. In fact, 91 percent of respondents report this approach is already in use.
As the enterprise workforce has become increasingly mobile, most enterprises have just 20 percent of endpoints actually dedicated to phones within their primary location. The greater number of endpoints is dedicated to remote or branch phones, at 39 percent, and mobile phones at 33 percent.
Likewise, one in three call center operators now work from home leveraging the advantage of the hosted softswitch.
The drive toward decentralization is increasing the demand for the hosted softswitch and other cloud deployments. Among those participating in the survey, only 16 percent currently have could solutions in place. A full 45 percent reported that cloud solutions are part of their communications plan for 2012.
For those respondents with plans to move communications to the cloud, favoritism was expressed for the private cloud over the public cloud at a nearly three to one ratio. The applications gaining the most attention on “must-have” lists include Unified Communications, Web collaboration and video conferencing. More than half of respondents are already using these technologies in their environments.
"Enterprise communications is in transition from PBX to IP and from premise to cloud. Siemens Enterprise Communications (News - Alert) is dedicated to providing our customers with flexible, open, enterprise communications solutions that adapt to their business needs, helping mitigate IT complexity, support a mobile workforce and facilitate this shift," said Chris Hummel, president, North America and CMO of Siemens Enterprise Communications, in the Telecom Lead report.
While a number of companies grasp the advantages offered in a hosted softswitch, there are still staffing issues and other concerns that are slowing the adoption and migration rates. The IT landscape is often viewed as complex. When this perception is combined with high turnover rates and lower skill sets, the migration is often hampered.
