What's Holding You Back from the Cloud?

Cloud technology is rapidly advancing in today’s IT world. Its benefits are broad and well documented by now.

However, according to CA Technologies, 53% of businesses surveyed have no plans to implement cloud solutions, and of those who do, nearly two thirds say it will take two years to allocate a proper budget. For contact centers, figures are even worse.

In a recent study lead by Altitude Software (News - Alert) to determine the leading challenges facing call centers going forward, the second largest issue was process optimization and performance increases. Despite this fact, cloud solutions are in use in only 15 percent of call centers. Why haven’t more contact centers made the transition to cloud, in the face of growing technological advancements and demonstrable benefits? What is the hold up?

It seems that Americans are simply confused by cloud. A Citrix study conducted by Wakefield Research found that despite widespread use of cloud technology, users – and by extension decision makers – simply do not understand the cloud. For example, while 97 percent of those surveyed claim to actively use online shopping, banking, social networking, and file sharing services (all cloud based technology), nearly 33 percent see the cloud as some distant dream of the future. 22 percent of respondents have even admitted to faking knowledge of the cloud, in both social and workplace environments. Furthermore, 51% of respondents believe stormy weather can affect cloud computing.

Simply put, many use it, but few understand it. When asked what “the cloud” is, a whopping 29 percent of respondents responded with the physical, meteorological clouds we see in the sky. Only 16 percent thought of computer networks for storing, accessing, and sharing data over the internet. This lack of knowledge is impacting the way business leaders assess their cloud service options.

Fortunately, it seems the right information is starting to slowly make its way across decision makers’ desks.  More and more partners are predicting cloud spending increases, as results showing the significant cost savings, greater scalability, and increased systems agility from adopting cloud-based solutions roll in.
