Headsets Gaining Popularity in Europe

Due to the increased popularity and usage of softphones in Europe, the country is seeing an uptake in the use of headsets as well. According to the latest findings from research firm Frost and Sullivan, the market shipped more than 1.3 million units in 2007.
 
The use of wireless in more offices as well as increased usage of softphones throughout the country is fueling the market growth for headsets, which Frost and Sullivan estimates will reach 2.7 million in 2013.
 
According to the report, "European Office Headset Market," headset vendors are specifically looking to Microsoft (News - Alert) Office Communicator clients to further adoption levels, as these users seek ways to multitask and increase productivity.
 
With a headset, it is possible to have easier communications that also free one's hands for performing other tasks.
 
“The trend of multitasking is motivating the need for hands-free telephony, which, in turn, creates a natural need for headsets,” said Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) Research Analyst Dorota Oviedo. “The proliferation of wireless headsets attached to mobile phones and the high adoption of PC headsets in the consumer space will boost the penetration of headsets in the office space.”
 
According to Frost and Sullivan price is also important and a differentiator in the headsets market since technology and design differentiation among headsets is not strong.
 
However, Oviedo said that buying organizations should look to the value of the headset beyond its price point and weigh in the ability to enhance productivity and provide hands free communications in their purchasing decisions. “Price points need to be compared with audio quality,” said Ovideo.
 
 
Ovideo also said that the softphone market segment is expected to "grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42.8 per cent from 2007 to 2013," and that a "strong push in this segment is anticipated to come from major e-mail vendors such as Microsoft (Office Communicator) and IBM Lotus (Sametime Unified Telephony Client); as well as PBX vendors such as Cisco (News - Alert) (Cisco Unified Personal Communicator).”
