Global Carriers Driving HD Voice Adoption to New Levels

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

HD voice adoption peaked once again in 2011 as dozens of carriers from around the world began or completed more than 50 mobile HD voice deployments, according to a new report from HD Voice News.

Based on three years of research and dialogue with various members of value chain, the "HD Voice 2012: Proliferation" report takes an in-depth look at a number of industry trends as well as a several challenges that must be overcome to achieve near-ubiquitous HD voice adoption. The report also details the myriad of HD voice products and services available today.

Researchers found Europe to be the breeding ground for the HD voice movement. Of the 52 HD voice deployments underway across the globe, more than half are occurring in Europe. Nearly a dozen European carriers – including France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) and Telekom Austria – have completed or are in the process of completing an HD voice deployment.

"It's easier to count the HD voice 'have nots' countries in Europe," said HD Voice News Editor-in-Chief Doug Mohney. "Pending U.S. VoLTE deployments get a lot of headlines, but HD voice is already deployed by six carriers in Africa and the Middle East."

HD voice adoption is being further enabled by the willingness of larger carriers to provide and support SIP interconnection services both in-network and between other service providers, says Mohney, who notes that Neutral Tandem and Verizon Business (News - Alert) both currently support G.722 HD voice broadband calls.

"Significant progress has been made to solve the ‘island problem’ in SIP interconnectivity for HD voice and video," says Mohney.

The report, available at a at a cover price of $120, also takes an in-depth look at a number of other HD voice-related topics, including the future of residential HD voice deployments among cable operators. The document also details the potential relationship between mobile HD voice and broadband HD voice services, and how it could eventually affect the market.

In addition, the report evaluates the viability of CAT-iq 2.0, the technology behind residential HD voice technology being deployed by the likes of Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom (News - Alert). Click here to access the report in full.
