Ooma's Latest Cordless Handset Offers HD Voice, Advanced Smartphone Features

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Palo Alto (News - Alert), Calif.-based Ooma added to its line of innovative HD voice products on Tuesday by introducing a new cordless handset that provides industry-leading call clarity and cutting-edge smartphone features.

When coupled with the company's Ooma Telo system, the cordless Ooma HD2 Handset is able to capture twice the voice data to double the fidelity of standard phone calls, which results in crystal clear HD voice call clarity. As many as four handsets can be paired with the company's famed Ooma platform.

One of the groundbreaking features of the new handset is its two-inch color screen and picture caller-ID software, which enables users to automatically sync the HD phone with their Facebook (News - Alert) account to display profile photos of their friends and family. When the phone rings, the picture of the caller will pop up on the all-color screen.

The Ooma HD2 Handset also allows users to download online contact lists from Facebook, Google (News - Alert) and Yahoo and easily manage them using the My Ooma web portal. The Ooma HD2 is the first home phone capable of automatically downloading Facebook profile photos and syncing online contacts.

Other features include one-touch voicemail, enabling users to check messages from any of their cordless handsets, as well as speakerphone functionality and a headset port for hands-free calling. The handsets also have an intercom feature, meaning users to talk between handsets and transfer calls.

Ooma customers who subscribe to the company's optional $9.99 per month Premier service can access several additional features, including three-way conferencing, Instant Second Line, call screening and Multi-Ring to simultaneously ring another phone, among other advanced features.

"Because Ooma is an Internet-based platform, it allows us to add innovative and useful features more typically associated with a smartphone and blend the mobile and home phone experiences,” Dennis Peng (News - Alert), Vice President of Product Management at Ooma, noted in a statement.

"A large color display with picture caller-ID and the ability to automatically sync online contacts is just the beginning for the HD2 handset," he added. "Ooma will make even more smartphone-like features available to our customers later this year through firmware updates, including customizable ringtones to help identify individuals or groups when calling."

As with other Ooma HD voice products, the HD2 Handset provides industry-leading security and range – all without interfering with home Wi-Fi networks or other Web-enabled devices.

The HD2 Handset, introduced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will be available in March at an M.S.R.P of $59.99.
