Mobile HD Voice Investments Driving Adoption

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Investments in HD Voice network deployments appear to be growing among operators throughout the world. According to this MyBroadBand report, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA (News - Alert)) has confirmed that such investments are expanding across Europe and throughout the world.

Mobile HD voice relies on Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband technology (W-AMR), which is standardized by 3GPP. Mobile HD voice also enables high-quality voice calls in mobile networks, while also driving an improved experience for the user. This form of HD voice delivers significantly higher voice quality for calls between mobile phones that support the feature, while it can also be implemented in GSM and WCDMA networks.

The Global Update report, the GSA’s Mobile HD Voice, was published June 3, 2011. This report confirms that 40 percent of countries in the European Union have already commercially launched mobile HD Voice services. Those not yet at this point are engaged in trials and tests ahead of planned commercial introduction. The promising outlook is that operator investments in mobile HD Voice have extended beyond Europe.

September 2009 saw the introduction of the first commercial mobile HD Voice service. Such services are now extended through 20 different mobile networks in 18 countries and territories, including Armenia, Belgium, Croatia, Hong Kong, France, Canada, Italy, India, Russia, Spain, Mauritius, Turkey, the UK, La Réunion and Luxembourg.

The planned commercial introduction of HD Voice is underway in such areas as Australia, Austria, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, UAE and the USA as trials and networks deployments have been introduced. In addition, a total of 33 HD Voice-capable phones are now available from leading manufacturers, such as HTC, LG, Nokia, Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) and Samsung.

Alan Hadden, president of the GSA, said in a statement, “The availability of HD Voice on mobile networks is quickly spreading. HD Voice enabled by W-AMR technology is the most significant development in the mobile voice service for many years.”

The strong business case for mobile HD voice includes offering customers the ability to make more, or longer, calls with this platform. They can also benefit from the higher level of quality service. With HD voice, operators can differentiate their offerings, enabling a high quality of service delivery for voice dependent business, such as call center services, emergency services and information services.

The optimal benefits offered in HD Voice are delivered on a mobile HD-capable network. These benefits can easily be realized when both the calling and the called party use HD Voice-capable phones.
