Ericsson Kicks Off Voice Quality Revolution with Industry's First HD Voice Call on CDMA

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Ericsson, telecom infrastructure and solutions provider for next generation services, announced it made the industry’s first High Definition (HD) voice call on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network.

HD voice significantly increases voice quality and intelligibility and decreases listening fatigue in mobile networks. HD voice also enhances the CDMA operator’s ability to deliver differentiated voice services and improves the subscriber experience.

A press release said Ericsson (News - Alert) successfully completed a CDMA wideband HD voice call using the Enhanced Variable Rate Codec Narrowband-Wideband (EVRC-NW) codec, showcasing a technical first for the CDMA industry.

For CDMA operators, this is an important development. HD voice delivers speech in a wider spectral range of 50Hz to 7000Hz. CDMA customers can enjoy increased voice quality, intelligibility and decreases listening fatigue, even in environments with high background noise.

According to a consumer research by Ericsson, voice quality is playing key role in the success of any telecom operator. Voice quality is a key differentiator between operator networks as it improves subscriber retention and increases mobile usage.

“We have demonstrated the first high-definition CDMA voice call in the world over an Ericsson network utilizing the new EVRC-NW 3GPP2 standard codec and ensuring interoperability with existing functionality while easing the rollout of future wideband services,” said Surya Bommakanti, vice president of the product area core, BU CDMA Mobile Systems at Ericsson, in a statement.

This is the stepping stone for the voice quality revolution and will significantly enhance CDMA networks. Ericsson is already introducing new technologies with superior voice quality. The new technologies are expected to benefit both CDMA subscribers and telecom service providers.

The Ericsson CDMA development team in association with telecom solutions provider Qualcomm reached this important milestone by successfully completing HD voice calls in a lab environment on a CDMA voice network.

Recently, Ericsson announced  it selected Vantrix, a provider of mobile video optimization and delivery solutions, to become their partner in video optimization.
