HD Conference Feature: LG's New HDTVs Get Thin
By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Although currently available only in Korea, manufacturer LG has introduced two new HDTVs with a thin outer frame, a screen border that measures just under an inch thick.
Industry observer Chris Brandrick said the plasma sets, dubbed the 'Skinny Frame' range, 'are available in 50- and 60-inch screen sizes. Both of the sets pack in three HDMI ports, USB connectivity options, and a refresh rate of 600Hz.' That's a nice refresh rate, too.
The Inquisitr reported that the skinny frame HDTV sets 'use less bezel thickness for a better hung on wall look and come in at an impressive 25mm thick,' adding that the TVs also feature three HDMI ports and a USB slot.
The sets costs $1,500 and $3,300, respectively, Brandrick said, and notes there are currently no firm plans to sell them in America.
'Nowadays, slimmer TV is better TV; and LG knows that,' Gadget.com wrote, adding that the USB port is a nice feature for sharing digital photos and videos, while Newlaunches.com sniffs that the sets are 'some sort of effort to re-kindle the flames of the dying Plasma species of TVs.'
Not so, countered Engadget.
'If you needed another reason to not stop believin' in plasma, look to LG,” the report said. “The company is introducing a pair of the sets in its home market of Korea dubbed 'Skinny Frame,' a reference to the 25mm thin border around the panels - which honestly isn't mind-blowingly thin, but nobody likes beefy bezels, right?'
Engadget noted that the offerings have 'automatic contrast adjustment based on lighting conditions, and the ability to play photos and videos from a connected USB drive. Not bad, but they're not cheap, either.'
Indeed, Screen Sleuth agreed, 'Who says Plasma as a HDTV technology is dead? Panasonic (News - Alert) isn’t saying, and apparently, neither is LG.'
