Oracle (News - Alert) has unveiled its new Big Data Appliance X3-2 – which may prove attractive to many businesses and other organizations looking to upgrade their technology in the big data age.
“Organizations are increasingly looking for mature, reliable enterprise-ready tools to support their big data initiatives,” Mike Olson, CEO at Cloudera, said in a company statement. “Optimized for Hadoop, Oracle Big Data Appliance with Cloudera delivers an easy-to-manage Hadoop platform, designed to meet the big data needs of today’s enterprise.”
The Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 includes hardware and software which features Intel’s (News - Alert) new processors, Apache Hadoop (CDH), Cloudera Manager and the new Oracle Enterprise Manager plug-in for Big Data Appliance.
Also, Oracle Big Data Connectors have increased SQL access to Hadoop from Oracle Database.
One of the strengths of the new option are 8-core Intel Xeon E5-2600 chips, which provide 33 percent more processing power. There is also 33 percent more memory per node.
With energy and cooling costs increasing by 30 percent – and other efficiencies – Oracle is also promoting the new solution as an economical option for businesses putting together big data processing platforms on their own, according to Enterprise App Today.
Hadoop is increasingly used to process unstructured data, according to Oracle. “This data has to be combined with structured business data in relational databases for analysis. Oracle Big Data Connectors enable this by providing high performance connectivity between Hadoop and Oracle Database and optimized Oracle R analysis of data on Hadoop along with database resident data,” the company said.
Upgrades help organizations manage and gain insights from information found in their data warehouses. “It's a job that's getting tougher as businesses are continually deluged with data,” Enterprise App Today added.
Less structured data includes weblogs, social media, e-mail, sensors and photographs – all of which can be mined.
