K-Electric Limited announced the signing of an agreement with InfoTech Pakistan to deploy Smart Grid Technology Platform with K-Electric’s SAP (News - Alert) Industry Solution for Utilities (IS-U). Following the development, K-Electric will be able to improve its Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) capability with the Oracle (News - Alert) Utilities Meter Data Management and Oracle Utilities Network Management System components integrated within the smart grid platform.
“This project will be key in enabling the power utility to continue its turnaround and establish itself as a commercially feasible and the best in class utility,” said Nayyer Hussain, CEO at K-Electric. “This will also serve as a role model and benchmark in not only Pakistan but across other developing markets too. This platform will give us greater visibility over our network, enhance our operations, deliver better customer service and provide the foundation for us to adapt to leading technologies in electrical distribution.”
Following the deployment of the new platform, K-Electric will be able to enhance its capability to effectively monitor the electrical network to restrain energy losses and improve distribution planning. The system will also enable the utility company to better handle recoveries and effectively address issues with network performance while also managing outages efficiently.
Speaking of the development, Naseer Akhtar, president and CEO at InfoTech Pakistan, said “We are excited to be partnering in this ambitious and groundbreaking project which will make both KE and InfoTech pioneers in Pakistan in bringing in a comprehensive smart grid product. KE’s decision to work with InfoTech reaffirms our position as one of the leading technology companies in Pakistan.”
The overall capabilities of the platform deployed by InfoTech Pakistan will enable K-Electric to significantly improve its customer service. During the first phase of the project implementation, around 10,000 smart meters will be installed in some of the selected localities in Karachi over a one year period. In the next phase of the project, InfoTech Pakistan will continue to deploy smart meters in other parts of the city.
K-Electric is a power utility company engaged in generating, transmitting and distributing electricity. The company supplies electricity to around 2.2 million customers in Karachi and is currently the only vertically-integrated power utility company in Pakistan.
