Tata Communications (News - Alert) has formed a partnership with network specialist Ciena Corporation to launch a 100 gigabits per second (100G) upgrade across Tata Communications’ TGN-Pacific and Intra-Asia submarine fiber networks.
TGN-P submarine cable system is the longest segment in route kilometers and believed to be the highest capacity subsea cables deployed in the Pacific, Tata Communications said. It connects the U.S to Japan and three routes in the TGN-Intra-Asia (TGN-IA) market across Asia.
To be more specific, the cable connects Emi, Chiba (Japan) to Hillsboro, Oregon; and Toyohashi and the Aichi Prefecture to Hillsboro as well.
Tata Communications' upgrade to 100G technology on the TGN-Pacific system will help the company play a leading role in addressing the future demands for high-capacity, cost-effective bandwidth, say industry experts.
“As longtime partners, Ciena and Tata Communications have leveraged Ciena’s technology to increase the capacity, extend the life and improve the availability of Tata Communications’ global network,” said Jason Phipps, general manager, North America, Ciena, in a statement.
“With the most recent upgrades, Tata Communications is expanding these attributes across its Pacific cable to deliver resilient, low latency 100G services between North America and Asia,” Phipps added.
For this deployment, Tata Communications leveraged Ciena’s 6500 Converged Packet Optical platform and GeoMesh solution. These solutions are based on Ciena’s OPn architecture for programmable network infrastructures, which are designed to help better monetize its network and provide flexibility to its customers, the company said.
Tata Communications is also using Ciena’s solutions to support its intra-Asia network, which spans roughly 6,700 km. The upgrade allows Tata Communications to handle capacity demands driven by high-bandwidth services such as cloud computing, video and mobile communications, the company said.
Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System delivers multi-layer service management capabilities that support streamlined service activation, fault management and performance monitoring
Genius (News - Alert) Wong, senior vice president of Global Network Services at Tata Communications, said, “Investments such as the 100G upgrade to our TGN-Pacific submarine cable and Intra-Asia routes enable us to meet customer demand for high-bandwidth services and applications, whilst ensuring end-to-end network performance for our enterprise and carrier customers across the U.S. and Asia.”
