By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor
The advent of Fax over IP (FoIP) solved a challenge in the business world where companies were increasingly migrating to all-IP environments and adopting unified communications technologies. As smartphones continue to proliferate throughout the corporate environment, the same level of encryption afforded in fax communications needs to be extended to mobility. Protected Mobility has provided the answer.
A mobile application security provider, Protected Mobility has announced the release of the ProtectedSMS. The secure messaging application mirrors the capabilities of FoIP for communications, yet works on the iPad, iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod Touch. The new application is also available on the Apple iTunes Store.

The ProtectedSMS offers a cryptographic module that is certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as well as the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 validation program. This program was put in place to ensure cryptographic modules, such as those used in FoIP, meet the appropriate government and military standards for data encryption.
“As smartphones and tablets become increasingly essential for corporate and government users, security is a leading concern for protecting sensitive information,” said William J. Marlow, security expert and founder of Protected Mobility, in a statement. “The availability of ProtectedSMS on the Apple iTunes Store now means that anyone can take advantage of low-cost mobile computing while meeting the most rigorous standards for security and privacy.”
For enterprise users of ProtectedSMS, the Protected Mobility Enterprise Center provides centralized control over provisioning, administration and policy enforcement.
Protected Mobility’s ProtectedSMS is positioned as the first mobile application to achieve FIPS Certification for cross-platform encryption for both Android (News - Alert) and Apple devices. With more than 120,000 customers throughout the world, Protected Mobility is now extending their capabilities, enabling users to keep identities private and protect information.
Protecting information in data transmissions has long been a market strength for fax technology. With the advent of FoIP, that value was extended to the all-IP environment. This new innovation from Protected Mobility meets the needs of the mobile professionals as companies throughout the world adopt enterprise mobility, recognizing the need for extended communications capabilities for those always on the go.
