Those making the move to fax over IP, meanwhile, have one more reason to cheer as the SIP Forum's Fax over IP Task Group recently released RFC 6913.

Many of you will be reading this column while attending ITEXPO Austin in Austin so perhaps a little Texas folklore is in order. The phrase "How the cow ate the cabbage" is a frequently used folk saying in Texas. In fact, the phrase was included in a speech at the 1988 Democratic convention by former Texas Governor Ann Richards. The generally accepted meaning is to tell someone a truth they do not want to hear. It certainly fits this column, as we regularly remind our readers about the dangers presented by not being prepared for business adversities. Procrastinators probably prefer silence.

Enterprises today are more focused than ever on FoIP, but just as in 2007, many "Internet Fax" solutions are now available. However, they're not all created equal so enterprises need to understand some background about the technology involved, including what it can and cannot do. For example, problems persist over the global carrier network. However, many of the issues have been identified and are being addressed - plus virtually 100 percent of the fax machines in the world are not FoIP capable anyway. Regardless, the T.38 FoIP standard is very useful within an enterprise network particularly with a virtual OS and VoIP - so pure point-to-point FoIP does not diminish the value of FoIP.

Fax-over-IP (FoIP) has received a lot of attention as a critical component of a global messaging solution which is why FaxCore helped pioneer this technology early in the century. Certainly the speed and convenience of today's messaging and video conferencing technologies has also provided senior executives with a great set of management tools for "remote global meetings." Theoretically, this should lead to reduced travel for management but that is not necessarily so. These same tools have also increased the available business opportunities and growth for companies seeking to expand their global operations. Some things change and some things will always remain the same.

Fax over IP has revolutionized the way in which users communicate sensitive documents to one another. But things come with the territory. Web messages means speedy faxes, sure, but they don't undergo the proverbial customs agent in traditional phone lines. "Digital signatures" are the Internet's equivalent to hard copy signatures, but how official are they if you don't physically ink them on paper?

Over that past weeks, part I and part II of this series reviewed several topics related to virtual reality and virtual solutions. Now may be a good time, however, to define - or redefine as it were - virtual reality.
"In philosophy, reality is the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or might be imagined." (Wikipedia)
March 23, 2012 |
Virtual reality is a term the general public likely associates with movies like Avatar, which blend real humans with imaginary ones and computer-generated graphics, or with alternate worlds where we, as humans, can interact with other humans through avatars. In other words, it combines the human with a representation that behaves as a human. Likewise, a virtual network is a mix of servers, combining real, physical servers with virtual servers. The virtual servers must exist on one more physical servers, so pure virtual is not really possible.

Green has become the favorite color for many politicians recently. It is great for them to be seen as defenders of wildlife and the environment. Preserving trees is part of the banter, so the Paperless Office phrase surfaces regularly. The term "Paperless Office" has been around for a long time and gained momentum during the 1970's. In 1975, a Business Week article predicted that advances in office automation would make paper redundant. The introduction of the PC pushed the concept further along. However, the term has lost its luster and there are very few paperless offices out there.

The Global Economy has been a hot topic in recent years. Of course, the Global Economy is not new and went into full swing shortly after the "discovery of the new world" by Christopher Columbus (aka Cristoforo Colombo, Cristobal Colon or any of the other names he used). The discoveries made in the new world transformed (or distorted as some would say) the global economy. Suddenly maize and potatoes were being grown in Europe and Asia. Eurasian diseases decimated the peoples of North and South America, allowing the Europeans to transform the environment to a European model.

People have been talking about "paperless offices" since they began estimating the number of sheets of paper thrown out each day, how many sheets of paper come from a tree, and consequently, how many trees are trashed daily. This was well before conversations about "being green" raised as many red flags as it does today, when paperless is only part of the conversation that also includes energy conservation, emission reduction, and other environmental factors. Of course, trees are as environmental as anything, so paperless is a natural part of the conversation

The fact is that most competing solutions offer similar feature sets and capabilities, but where they often differ is in deployment time, management complexity, and maintenance requirements. With the number of tasks both IT managers and end users are faced with on a daily basis, it seems intuitive that the simplest solutions - which does not mean sacrificing on feature sets - are likely to be the most popular.

The advent of the portal document format, or PDF, changed the way most businesses shared documents. For the construction industry, it would take a while for this technology to take hold, as it traditionally been a paper-based business. Even as technology continues to emerge to streamline document communications, those in construction continue to rely on tried and true methods such as fax to conduct business.
The ability to fax has been a longtime standby in this industry, but traditional paper-based faxes did not always generate the best product on the receiving end, nor could it be effectively managed on the network. When technology evolved to move fax capabilities to the network, things changed.

Linask asked Schroeder just why is fax so popular now. Schroeder said during the video interview the reason fax is still "relevant" is because of "the legal system." Evidently, not just in North America, but around the world, a fax is considered a legal document unlike other forms of communications like e-mail.

Fax over IP appears to be a simple technology, but that's only because a lot of things are running in the background. In Part I of this series, Max Schroeder, senior vice president of FaxCore, a Denver-based fax server application provider, reviewed legacy technologies, such as fax boards and fax machines.
In the next installment, Schroeder discusses why customers are demanding the latest in fax technology. Part II follows below.
December 17, 2009 |
Fax appears to be a simple concept. You walk up to a fax machine, scan in a document, select a fax number and send. Simple. You can even use the print function in applications like Microsoft Word to choose a fax printer like FaxCore, select a phone number and fax from your desktop. Simple.
It only seems simple because a lot of things are running in the background, which most people don’t know. Those parts are not so simple. Today’s communications technologies also offer users many choices, including Fax over IP, FoIP, Fax Boards, Virtual Fax, Fax Services, and Customer Premise Fax, or CPE Fax. Sometimes it can be confusing as to what type of solution combination of solutions you should implement.

Human beings are creatures of habit. Once we put a process in place, we are reluctant to change. Unfortunately, complacency can have an adverse effect on profits. Just because a particular solution made economic sense one or two years ago, it does not mean it holds true today.
Recently, TMCnet came across an article that mentioned some technology under development was prompted by a national postal strike in the U.K. in 2007. Could a fax server be a good solution to this type of problem? Max Schroeder, senior vice president of FaxCore, talked about his experience in the area.
November 20, 2009 |
We all get complacent when a product is in place and working. The phrase, "no harm, no foul" comes to mind, but it is not necessarily correct. Old technology can be costly in several ways, which is definitely harmful. And in this economy, companies need to watch every dollar.
The key to determining when any product needs to be replaced is based on several criteria, but many are paramount:

Bert Lance, President Jimmy Carter's director of the office of management and budget, once uttered the familiar adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That phrase is generally interpreted to mean that if a system is working, any attempts to improve it are pointless.
But Max Schroeder, senior vice president of FaxCore, a Denver-based fax server application provider, disagrees.
October 30, 2009 |
Fax servers first came to prominence in the 1990s. But many fax server applications today are stalled in that very decade. Customers that have deployed these products are still using last century's tools and have not embraced 21st century technologies.
It's similar to owning and running a 1995 Chevy that never had a tune-up, which is both inefficient and expensive to maintain.
