Virtual Fax Hot Button Issue in 2009, Study Says

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

In a report called “ICT Opportunities in an Economic Downturn”, research firm Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) predicted belt-tightening will increase investment in sustainable technology initiatives such as virtualization, videoconferencing, thin clients and power consumption modeling as they are able to lower costs as well as boost green credentials.

First, we need to define the term Virtualization. Server virtualization inserts a layer of abstraction between the physical server hardware and the software that runs on the server converting the physical machine into one or more virtual machines or VMs. Resources such as the CPU, memory, Storage I/O and network access are allocated to the various VMs. Each of these VMs runs its own operating system and applications.

Since “Going Green” is a hot item  even in this cold economy, Virtualization has gained a lot of attention from CFOs to CTOs. The Green Advantage is gained via improved server utilization. Rather than deploying 10 under-utilized servers, it is possible, for example to deploy two, three or four servers with a higher utilization. This is of particular interest when looking at technologies such as fax where the cost of a server and its operating system can cost as much as the fax server application alone.

FaxCore (News - Alert) jumped on the virtualization bandwagon early just as they had with other new technologies like Dialogic/Brooktrout’s SR140 FoIP fax drivers. This is of particular importance since fax boards are not supported in virtual servers, so all-software solutions are required. The SR140 product line is perfect for a VM fax solution.

If you plan to attend TMC’s (News - Alert) Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO East 2009, you may want to attend Conference Session (U2-02) “Business Continuity, Virtualization” on February 3, 2009 from 1:00-1:45pm. You can also visit the FaxCore Booth #313 to see a true 21st Century Fax (KL 6) (KL 9) and a 3-peat winner of the Internet Telephony (News - Alert) Product of the Year Award.
