Integrating Fax over IP with Microsoft CRM

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Faxes are still an important communication tool – though they have been updated to meet the needs of new technology. For instance, Fax over IP (FoIP) allows users to send faxes over the Internet, and can be integrated with Microsoft (News - Alert) CRM.

In addition, in a recent blog post about PowerFax, a workflow extension plugin, it was reported how fax machines are still important for businesses – despite the wide presence of the Internet.

“In many respects, fax still remains an important means of business communication,” according to a WikiHow entry. “Every company can combine the simple power of Internet Fax technology with its CRM [customer relationship management] software platform and obtain instant access to unified document communication.”

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 does not have fax capability out of the box, however, Internet Fax can be integrated with CRM.

It is a multi-step process: First, users need to conclude whether a CRM app needs to be able to send and receive faxes, as well as administer fax workflow. Next, users can subscribe to an Internet fax service. It should also offer APIs, such as a SOAP programming interface. The fax service can then be integrated into a CRM tool. This will allow users to fax such documents as invoices, purchase orders, or statements from the CRM platform.

To meet these needs, FaxCore (News - Alert), a fax server application, provides built-in Microsoft CRM integration. It was built on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0., and is integrated with Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange and SharePoint.  Also, FaxCore tracks incoming and outgoing faxes, providing enhanced document archiving. With these capabilities, the service can deliver fast, reliable, and highly secure fax traffic over enterprise networks.
